B2Buzz on Organic Social Media - February Roundup

Aliza Hughes | CMO

Seeing a post that says “these are the most important organic social media updates you need” can feel a bit stressful. It’s kind of like saying that your target audience is “everyone”, which we all know is impossible.

There are so many elements to social media marketing that it’s really just click baitto even claim that there are “most important updates”. Even the fact that we’re talking about organic social media here and not paid narrows down the focus.

And then when you consider the fact that you need to break down which platfrom, content type and channel you’re posting from, it can feel very overwhelming.

So this newsletter is for you – B2B marketers who are working with organic social media as an important element of your marketing strategy.

Thanks for joining me for the 6th edition of this newsletter. I hope it has been helpful in helping you understand which organic social media updates are actually relevant for you, and I’m always open to feedback (positive or not) to help me continue to publish valueable content.

Usually I break down the updates by platform but I’m swiching things up a bit this time and I’m going to group them by topic.

🥸 Another month, another new platform…

Yalla, let’s jump in…

FEED UPDATES

Both LinkedIn and Instagram have announced that they are testing alternate feeds, separating between an algorithm-suggested content feed and a “Because you follow” (Instagram) or a “Connections Only” (LinkedIn) feed.

I think this is really interesting because it alludes to the fact that the platforms get that they aren’t showing you the content that you actually want to see.

The potential problem for B2B marketers though is that most people are going to primarily choose the feed of their connections or accounts they follow, and we know that people are much more likely to follow people than brand accounts.

This is a PSA to make sure you have thought leaders and brand ambassadors posting relevant content to their audiences!

You’re much more likely to follow the CEO, CMO, CFO of a company than you are to follow the company page. Your audience is the same.

Why do these ⬆️ embeded links have to look so boring? 🙁

VIDEO UPDATES

It wouldn’t be an organic social media newsletter by me if we didn’t talk about video lol

Let’s start with my favorite (albeit debatable) video social media platform …

YOUTUBE

Starting with a very interesting thread by Matt Navarra , suggesting that YouTube might be a seriously underrated marketing channel right now.

I suggest reading through the whole thing but I want to highlight one part:

If you’re already creating “reel” shaped videos for any other platfrom, it’s a no brainer to post them to YouTube also.

With that in mind, it’s also interesting to note that long-form videos are still king on YouTube. And I have to say that I was shocked when I read this:

Digital i’s respondents (YouTube users over the age of 18) now spend 73% of their YouTube watch timeenjoying videos that are more than 30 minutes long.

https://www.tubefilter.com/2025/02/06/youtube-long-form-viewership-increase-shorts/

As someone who loves podcasts, I understand the pleasure of investing time into a piece of content, but I listen to hour long podcasts while I’m walking my very large dog, I’m impressed that people are watching long podcasts on YouTube (although now that I think about it, maybe they just have it playing in the background also?)

The point is – there is still a ton of value from long-from videos. And you don’t have to film anything specifically for the platform, you can just reuse the webinar, podcast, event you’ve already had filmed and publish it to YouTube (ahem, the second largest search engine in the world, owned by the first largest search engine.)

And the added benefit of then being able to edit the content into shorter videos for Shorts…

INSTAGRAM

You know that I love Adam Mosseri’s videos and this month he answered a very important question in his Reels – how watch time percentage affects the reach of the video – and the answer is that watching 10 seconds of a 10 seconds video is the same as watching 10 seconds of a 30 second video.

Bottom line – bring value for the whole video and people will watch it. Don’t edit it down, down extend it for the sake of getting someone to watch more – just bring value.

FACEBOOK

Facebook now only stores live videos for 30 days, will delete old broadcasts

So don’t forget to download your lives and then publish them to YouTube before you lose them. (See reason above 🙂

ANALYTICS

Threads Drives 73.6% More Engagement Than X

Pretty self explanitory but I’ve linked it so you can read more if you want.

Facebook has started sending notifications about the best day and time to post on your page

I’m not sure this fits in analytics because it’s unclear if Facebook is going to show you your analytics that prove the “best” time… and also this…

LinkedIn is now showing impressions results on your comments. I’m not linking anything here because I don’t want to actually give this any attention.

Let’s all agree right here and now that we will NOT be reporting on impressions from comments. This is a vanity metric if ever there was one. And I’m even going so far as to predict that this metric will disappear in the next few months.

New platform and other randomness

BuzzFeed’s New Plan: An AI-Powered Social Media Platform to Help “Spread Joy”

“BuzzFeed Inc. head Jonah Peretti says he wants to make the Internet fun again; and, after years of relying on social media companies to deliver his media empire’s content to audiences, BuzzFeed will do so by launching a new social media platform.”

Here are the apps battling to be become the ‘TikTok for Bluesky’

And finally.. this headline caught my eye… How LinkedIn became luxury fashion’s newest runway. An interesting read if you spend all your day on LinkedIn like I do 🙂

That’s it for February 2025 B2B organic social media updates!

See you again next month!
